Is low self-esteem affecting your weight loss?

low self esteem affecting weight loss

Do you have days where you feel you are just not good enough, that life is just too hard and all you want to do is pull the covers over you and stay in bed all day?

We all have good and bad days but how you respond can make or break your weight loss efforts. If you regularly have feelings of self-doubt, inadequacy and put everyone before yourself, you may find low self-esteem is affecting your weight loss.

For some, food can be a real crutch to lean on and to help soothe the pain. However, that second helping of ice-cream or indulging in junk food won’t make you feel better about yourself, if anything it will make you feel worse.

When I weighed 100 kilos, I thought food was my friend. But when I realized the only way to change my habits and negative mindset was to believe in myself. My life changed when I started to think and act like a healthy person and love myself unconditionally. I lost 35 kilos and happily have been in my healthy weight range since 1993.

A shift in the way I thought about myself changed my life in more ways than I could have ever imagined. I want this for you too. You deserve to be happy, to believe in yourself and feel proud of who you are. I did it and so can you.

Start by throwing away all the reasons, excuses, stories or explanations about why you can’t lose weight and start right now with a new fresh outlook. Make a list, get a plan and work out what you need to do to get started on the right path. Before you know it, you will reap the rewards of your efforts and I guarantee you will like what you see and more importantly how you feel.

Here are 8 ways to improve your self-esteem:

  1. List all the things that you like about yourself. Try to think of at least 10 things, if you struggle, think of compliments you have received and write these down.
  2. Acknowledge your successes and accomplishments. Whether big or small, give yourself a pat on the back for all you have achieved.
  3. Give up the ‘victim’ act. Stop blaming others for your life circumstances, begin to see yourself as the creator of your future.
  4. Stop putting yourself down and being critical of yourself. Learn from your mistakes and see them as valuable lessons rather than feeling guilty about them.
  5. Stop comparing yourself to others. Only ever compare yourself with a former version of you.
  6. Change the way you think. If you have a thought that starts with “I can’t”, “I need to”, “I should”, change it to “I can”, “I will” and “I must”.
  7. Be present. Focus on enjoying the present moment, rather than living in the past or future.
  8. And finally, be your own best friend. Don’t give negative self-talk any power – instead be positive and support the most important person in your life, YOU.
