Traditional party food is often high in fat and adding alcohol to the mix can spell disaster for a slimmer.

But celebrating in style doesn’t have to break the calorie bank. It is possible to plan a healthy Christmas party and no one will notice the difference!

I love to entertain and my guests always appreciate the healthy food on offer from my 9 low fat cookbooks. Today I want to show you how to plan a party with food that won’t wreak havoc on your waistline, or your guests.

My healthy Christmas party ideas:

Dips are always popular

However, most are based on sour cream or cream cheese, both very high in saturated fat. I base my dips on cottage cheese; once blended smooth add your preferred flavours to the mix – you wouldn’t know the difference. Serve with veggie sticks and rice crackers or my Corn Chips (book 1).

Avoid anything deep fried

Refer to my party food section (book 4) for great alternatives; many of these are suitable to be frozen so can be made ahead.

Fresh prawns are an easy option

Serve with my low-fat cocktail sauce (Book 1).

Sushi makes a great finger food

Choose the healthy options; avoid the deep-fried chicken. Cut them into small slices so they go further and serve with low salt soy sauce. Or make your own from my latest cookbook – More Cooking for 1 or 2 people. There’s Tuna Lettuce Sushi or Chicken Teriyaki Lettuce Sushi to try.

Forget cheese platters

Make my Trio of Cheese recipe (book 7).

Savoury slices will impress

My Zucchini Slice (book 1) or Ham and Corn Slice (book 7) are perfect served cold in warmer weather. Make in a rectangular dish the day before then cut into bite sized pieces on the day.

Include something sweet

Try my individual Pavlovas from More Cooking for 1 or 2 people. My Mini Fruit Tarts (book 6) or Caramel Tarts (book 3) will all prove popular.

Fruit platters are a winner

I love to offer a fruit platter at social gatherings. The vibrant colours look amazing and often this is the first platter to need a refill. Serve with some low fat yoghurt or my Creamy Sweet Dip (book 1).

Something to drink

I always have a water station so people can help themselves as often as they like. Why not make my Annie’s Fruit Punch (book 5); it’s so refreshing on hot days and popular with both young and old.

Add some Christmas flair

A Christmas party wouldn’t be complete without some traditional fare. Try my Marshmallow and Fruit Bubble Bar (book 4) for a healthy version of white Christmas. My Christmas section in book 2 includes lots of favourites such as Fruit Mince Pies, muffins, Christmas cakes, pudding and strudel.

A final thought

To make sure the party goes off without a hitch always write out a plan. Work out what can be made ahead and what needs to be made on the day. Do a timeline for the day so you make sure you get it all done and have time to freshen up before your guests arrive.
