Did someone say Dairy Free?

Cow’s milk is one of the most common food allergens and can often go undetected.

You may have been able to drink milkshakes until the cows come home (pardon the pun) without a problem when you were younger and yet now milk is a problem. More and more people are finding that a low dairy or dairy free diet is more tolerable.

Beyond childhood, most people stop producing the enzyme lactase, which is needed to digest lactose (the sugar in milk). Our western diet is filled with milk, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and cream.

If you think that dairy is causing you problems, perhaps you identify with some of the following symptoms:

  1. You get stomach cramps for no obvious reason.
Do you get an upset tummy or need to rush to the loo after a creamy pasta or your morning latte?
  2. You visit the toilet frequently.
Lactose intolerance most common symptoms are diarrhea and flatulence. Time to visit the doctor.
  3. You feel sick for no apparent reason.
Nausea is another common symptom of lactose intolerance, which may depend on how much you have consumed and how well you tolerate pain.
  4. You have eczema.
One of the causes of eczema can be cow’s milk which affects your immune system and how it reacts to the protein in cow’s milk.
  5. You’re wheezing.
If you have a problem with constant wheezing and coughing this could be your body reacting to cow’s milk. You can also experience swollen lips.
  6. You have low energy.
Yes, this can sometimes be linked to a lactose or casein intolerance.

If you suspect that dairy could be a problem, try going completely dairy free for a week and see if your symptoms improve. In Australia foods containing milk or milk products must be clearly labelled in bold type on the packaging.

And the good news is that I’ve got you covered with my new Dairy Free Vanilla Premium Breakfast Shake.
