10 tips to make you look like a pro in the kitchen

look like a pro in the kitchen

Not feeling comfortable in the kitchen can make even the simplest of tasks seem daunting.

Have you ever noticed how some people just seem to know what to do in every situation in the kitchen? Here are 10 tips to make you look like a pro in the kitchen even if you lack confidence in that department.

1. Cut cakes, cheesecakes and desserts like a pro

The secret when cutting cheesecakes or similar desserts is to use a warm knife. Place hot water in a large mug and dip the knife into hot water, use paper towel to wipe excess water off the knife, then cut. Repeat for each slice. Use the same technique when serving ice cream with a scoop.

2. Retain the colour of boiled greens

Add a little sugar before you boil peas or beans to retain the bright green colour.

3. Test an egg for freshness before using

This is so easy. Place the whole egg in a cup or glass of water, if it floats it’s old and best not to use it.

4. Avoid tears when cutting onions

Put your onion in the freezer a few minutes before cutting it, this will make it less likely to give you watery eyes. While nothing can totally remove the tears for everyone, cold onions are less likely to cause stinging eyes.

5. Use gloves for these tasks

Wear gloves any time you are cutting chillies to avoid getting the chilli juice on your hands. Gloves are also handy when making pastry or mixing meatballs to avoid getting food under your fingernails and in your jewellery.

6. Save a bag of brown sugar

If your brown sugar has hardened, add a damp paper towel to the bag of brown sugar, seal it and let it sit overnight. This will add moisture back to the sugar and soften it so it’s easier to use.

7. Avoid accidents

Be careful with water, oils and cooking sprays in the kitchen that they don’t drip or spray on the floor and cause a slippery surface. And… place a damp cloth under your cutting board to prevent it from slipping while you’re chopping. Check out mine here

8. Squeeze juice easier

Keep your oranges, lemons and limes at room temperature then before juicing, roll them back and forth on your kitchen countertop, this will ensure you get the maximum amount of juice.

9. Be sharp

Ask any Chef and they’ll tell you that the most important tool in the kitchen is a sharp set of knives. Blunt ones can be dangerous so always use sharp knives to make food prep easier and quicker.

10. Cook perfect rice

Want light, fluffy boiled rice? Use Basmati rice as it cooks the best and has a low GI and, do yourself a favour and buy a rice cooker. Rinse raw rice in a strainer then add to your rice cooker, add 2 parts of water to 1 part rice. For example, if you have 1 cup of raw rice add 2 cups water. Put the lid on and don’t interrupt the cooking process by lifting the lid while cooking. Once the cooking time has elapsed run a fork through the rice and there you have perfect fluffy rice.

Final thoughts

Hopefully these few quick tips will help you to feel more confident in the kitchen and not panic when faced with a tricky situation. The more time you spend cooking, the more tips and tricks you’ll pick up and, before you know it, you too will look like a pro in the kitchen.
