Winter Bugs
During the cold months there are many germs floating around and it seems that even with spring here we still vulnerable to viruses or colds. There are some things you can do to try and avoid the viruses that drag us down over winter or at least recover quicker. Firstly try and not get stuck in rooms that aren’t ventilated well as you only need someone to sneeze or cough and the germs will find you. Places like planes, class rooms, offices and buses are where viruses are quickly spread. Another way to pick up germs is through touching things that are contaminated. To avoid this you need to frequently disinfect or wash down commonly touched areas. Same would go for dish cloths, mops and kitchen utensils. But the biggest germ carries are children’s toys, door knobs and phones. If a child has a cold then I would suggest that you need to clean the toys every day while they are sick so that others in the house or visitors don’t catch their germs. Also sharing cutlery, glasses and cups wouldn’t be a good idea if someone is sick in the house. Don’t leave snotty tissues lying around, throw out used tissues as quickly as possible and keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
I wonder if there really is anything that we can do to prevent catching colds and flu, it is hard to avoid something that we can’t see. I think it is a good idea if you are susceptible to colds and flues to think about taking supplements, it may not stop you from getting a cold but most times you will find recovery quicker. Taking Vitamin C during winter will help boosts your immune system and it is also a powerful antioxidant. Echinacea is another popular herb that also boosts the immune system but you should never take it for longer than a week. Garlic has great anti-viral properties that may help you fight off a cold. It is best to take garlic raw or in a capsule form as cooking garlic destroys a lot of its health benefits. Elderberry and vitamin E will help too. But the best remedy of all is to not be run down and tired. If you feel a cold coming on then try and rest as much as you can and drink lots of water to keep you hydrated. The best way to avoid illness is to have a healthy constitution, eat a healthy diet and keep fit.
