Tip for diabetes

My cookbooks are officially endorsed and recommended by Diabetes Australia, and have tips for diabetics all the way through them so cooking the right way is easy. Dietitian Lisa Cochrane, who writes in my cookbooks, says that 90% of all people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. Once diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes you unfortunately have it for life. However it can be managed, and managed well through having a healthy lifestyle. You may also require medication. If you are concerned and want to know more about diabetes then call Diabetes Australia on 1300 136588. There is no special diet required for people with diabetes, but it is recommended that you eat regular meals and snacks spread evenly over the day.

Here are some tips to help you avoid diabetes:

1. Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods.
2. Eat plenty of breads, cereals, vegetables and fruits.
3. Eat a diet low in fat and particularly low in saturated fats.
4. Maintain a healthy body weight by balancing physical activity and food intake.
5. If you drink alcohol, limit your intake.
6. Eat only a moderate amount of sugars and foods containing added sugars.
7. Choose low salt foods and use salt sparingly.
8. Eat foods containing calcium. This is particularly important for girls and women.
9. Eat foods containing iron. This applies especially to vegetarians, athletes, girls and women.
10. Remember that healthy eating is just one side of the story. Regular physical activity is just as important for good health, so get moving!
