Diabetes - type 1 and type 2

Diabetes - type 1 and type 2

There are two types of diabetes, with about 90% of people with diabetes having type 2. This form of diabetes develops when the insulin is not able to work properly, which is called insulin resistance, and can often be managed by changing your diet and losing weight.

Type 1 is usually (but not always) diagnosed in children and young adults and accounts for only 10–15% of all cases, in which no insulin is produced. In type 1, the insulin producing cells of the pancreas (beta cells) have been destroyed leaving no insulin available to open the doors of the cell for glucose to enter. Cells then have no energy and blood glucose levels rise excessively high. Type 1 diabetes is managed with insulin replacement through lifelong insulin injections, by following a healthy diet and eating plan, taking regular exercise and monitoring of blood glucose levels regularly.

Type 2 diabetes can usually be managed by a combination of a healthy diet, regular physical activity and, in some cases, medications. There is no special diet required for people with diabetes; just eat regular healthy meals and snacks spread evenly over the day.

If you want to decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, eat a healthy diet, be active and reduce the amount of body fat you carry. Having a diet that embraces lots of healthy choices in all the food groups and eating in moderation will help to not only control diabetes, but also help you avoid having a weight problem.
